About us

The Fisheries Ecology group it is integrated inside de Department of Ecology and Marine Resources of the Institute of Marine Research (IIM), dependent of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). CSIC is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Belonging to theSpanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the Secretary of State for Research.

The group of Fisheries Ecology develops his activities in the line of  Ecosystems Approach to the management of  live marine resources .

The general aim of the group is to generate knowledge and develop the necessary instruments for putting into practice the ecosystems approach  in the management of live marine resources. In this line, the group of Fisheries Ecology pretends not only collaborate with the management and conservation of aforesaid resources and their ecosystem, but also give answer to the socioeconomic demands of the marine dependant productive sectors . In the fulfillment of this aim is remarkable the participation of team members  in scientific advising organisms of the fisheries management, like NAFO or ICES. Highlighting our direct involvement in the creation of the NAFO Working Group on Reproductive Potential, and active aprticipation  in the Working Group on Ecosystem Science and Assessment (WGESA).

In this setting, the group develops his work on the fisheries of diverse exploited species , target of the industrial, artesanal and recreational fishing. The projects of research in which it works  include the analysis of the dynamics of populations, the study of essential biological parameters, critical interactions, the relations between species and the use of the habitat, always directed to improve the knowledge  of the populations ecology and the mechanisms that determine the fluctuations in their abundance, with special emphasis in the study of  recruitment, reproductive potential and the impact of the different measures of fisheries management on them.

Due to the situation of  general exploitation of the resources and the change in the strategies of fisheries management, the group also orients his efforts to the development of new tools of evaluation and management that consider the resilience of the populations and the use of ecosistemic indicators , in particular oriented to resources with limited data .

As support to these lines of research, the group counts on a laboratory of histology where the samples for the reproductive biology studies are processed , a laboratory of  image analysis in which  diverse protocols for the estimation of reproductive parameters have been developed, equipment for age determination  by means of reading and interpretation of growth rings in otoliths, a laboratory for bioenergetic analysis and more recently acustic telemtry devices for spatial ecology studies. Full details of available facilites and resources here.

The investigation carried out by the Fisheries Ecology group are managed through research porojects in the field of basic and applied research or technological development. Most research projects are multi-year and depending on the funding agency may be transnational and they are developed in collaboration with other research organizations.

All the projects in which we participate comes from competitive calls . The projects of basic or applied research come mainly from three agencies :

Complete list of projects.

In recent years, the group has made special effort to participate in prospective projects and technological development of the fisheries sector, mainly in Galicia, collaborating on prospective studies and participating in the Plataforma Tecnolóxica Galega da Pesca. Spetial attention also on international cooperation projects withinin the AECID technical advice, projects and scholarships PCI AECID -MAE and studies for the Inter-American Development Bank.

Some of the research projects are developed exclusively within the group, but it is more often develop together with other institutions , these partnerships allow to combine efforts , expertise and equipment.
